Personalized Care in a World of Generalized Advice

For those who know me, you know I’m a pretty open book. Sometimes maybe a little too much.

But lately, I’ve found myself reflecting on something I didn’t entirely expect when I opened EmpowerYOU Medical Wellness.

I opened this practice with the goal of doing medicine differently.

I wanted to spend time with patients.  To really get to know them. To understand their stories, struggles, goals, fears, frustrations, and what has or hasn’t worked for them in the past.

And honestly? I assumed that once people heard: “There’s a doctor who will actually spend more than 15 minutes with you…” that my biggest challenge would be figuring out how to fit everyone into my schedule.

But while things have been steady, let’s just say my front door hasn’t exactly been broken down by people rushing in.

And I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about why..

We Live in a World of Convenient Health Advice

I get it. Life is busy.

Making appointments takes effort.

Starting something new can feel overwhelming.

Health care is expensive.

And sometimes taking that first step toward change is honestly just hard.

But I think there’s another piece to this too.

We now live in a world where health information is everywhere. There are influencers sharing what worked for them. Friends recommending supplements, workouts, or meal plans. Online programs promising fast results. Med spas and websites offering GLP-1 medications with minimal follow-up.

And honestly, I understand the appeal.

If you find someone relatable or inspiring, it’s natural to think:

“Maybe if I do what worked for them, it’ll work for me too.”

Sometimes it helps. But sometimes it doesn’t.

I actually catch myself doing this too. I’ll follow someone whose body frame or style feels similar to mine, order clothes that look amazing on them… and then end up returning half of it because it just doesn’t work for me.

Just like clothes, health, and especially weight are a lot like that.

It is very rare that one-size-fits all.

Two People Can Look Similar On Paper…

and Need Completely Different Care

I see it all the time in my clinic.

Two women may both be in their 40s, working full time, juggling kids, stress, marriage, aging parents, poor sleep, and little time for themselves.

From the outside, their lives may look nearly identical.  But underneath their stories are completely different.

The environment they grew up in.

Their relationship with food.

Hormones.

Sleep.

Stress.

Trauma.

Medical history.

Genetics.

Metabolism.

Medications.

All of these things shape health and weight in ways we as medical professionals didn’t fully appreciate until now, which is why I believe personalized care matters so much.

The Part That Honestly Scares Me The Most..

GLP-1s.

As an obesity medicine physician, this is especially important when it comes to GLP-1 medications.

And let me be clear: I prescribe them. I believe they can be incredibly helpful tools.

But they are only ONE part of a much bigger treatment plan.

What really worries me is how quickly these medications are now being handed out with very little discussion about nutrition, muscle preservation, long-term sustainability, or the medical complexity of obesity itself.

Before I opened EmpowerYOU Medical Wellness, I worked briefly for an online weight management company. Initially, I was excited by the idea of helping more patients gain access to treatment.

At first, the company emphasized follow-up visits, nutrition support, and ongoing oversight. But over time, those requirements became looser, with less monitoring and less provider involvement.

It didn’t sit well with me. And ultimately, it was one of the reasons I left.

GLP-1 medications are not simply a “quick fix” for weight loss. They are one treatment option for the treatment of chronic disease of obesity, with weight loss being just one piece of the bigger picture. These medications can also improve metabolic health, help protect the heart and kidneys, and reduce inflammation.  This is why the use of GLP1 medications especially deserves thoughtful, individualized medical care and oversight.

Without proper guidance, on GLP1 medications patients can also lose significant muscle mass, become nutritionally depleted, lose weight too rapidly, or struggle once the medication is stopped.

And unfortunately, social media rarely talks about that part.

If you lost weight tomorrow, would you know how to keep it off?

  • 0%Yes

  • 0%Maybe

  • 0%Not Really

  • 0%I am not sure

Let's Be Real.. This Is About MORE Than Just Weight Loss

At the end of the day, this really isn’t just about weight.

It’s about health care.

It’s about having someone who listens long enough to understand the full picture.

Someone who helps you build a plan around your real life.

Someone who adjusts with you when life happens or things stop working.

Someone who supports you without judgment.

That’s the kind of medicine you’ll find at EmpowerYOU Medical Wellness.

Because your story matters.

And your health deserves care that is personalized to you.

Rupal, very well written. Proud of you and love what you are doing. It’s important for folks to read this cause they need to understand the complexity of their bodies and how to keep the weight off. And work with someone who cares.
